Student Spotlight: Ricardo Campos – Leading with Passion and Purpose in IT

My goals professionally are to be the one that everyone turns to, to be an incredible leader for those that need it.
Meet Ricardo Campos, a standout student at Western Michigan University whose journey from the Navy to the Help Desk at the Office of Information Technology (OIT) is as inspiring as it is impactful.
Roots in Service
Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Ricardo's path to WMU began after serving in the military as a nuclear electrician in the Navy. Seeking a place with seasons and a strong academic program, he found his way to Michigan and enrolled in WMU's Computer Information Systems program within the Haworth College of Business.
"I've always loved technology," Ricardo shared. "I didn't want to go into computer science because I wasn't confident in programming, but I knew I wanted something that blended IT and business. This program was the perfect fit."
From Tech 1 to Student Lead
Ricardo's journey at OIT began with a tour and a conversation with the Help Desk supervisor. He started as a Tech 1 and quickly rose to become the Student Lead at the Help Desk, a role that bridges student support and staff coordination.
"I noticed people were already turning to me with questions," he said. "I figured that's what a student lead does, so I applied."
In his role, Ricardo ensures that students, faculty, staff, and retirees leave satisfied with their tech support experience. His day typically starts with checking updates on university systems, answering calls, supporting fellow student techs, and liaising with the back office to resolve complex issues.
Building Toward the Future
Ricardo expects to graduate in December 2025 and is already thinking ahead. His academic path is broad, but his sights are set on data analytics—a field that combines his love for technology with the power of information.
"At OIT, I'm learning how systems connect and communicate. That foundation is essential for working with large datasets and understanding the infrastructure behind analytics."
Beyond the Classroom
Outside of work and academics, Ricardo is a member of two RSOs: the Hispanic Business Student Organization and BAIT (Business Analytics and Information Technology). He's also an avid reader—whether it's sci-fi, fantasy, or tech articles—and enjoys gardening in his free time.
Ricardo credits his father as a major influence: "He always told us to study and do better than he did. That's what drives me."
Looking Ahead
Ricardo's goals are clear: to become a master in his field, a trusted leader, and someone others turn to for guidance. His experience at OIT is preparing him for that future by showing him how interconnected departments work together to support a larger mission.
"I want to be successful and happy," he said. "And I want to keep learning."
