Hannah Craft works as a student tech at the Technology Help Desk, supporting students, faculty, and staff with common technology issues while using quieter moments to stay on top of her coursework.

Finding the Right Path at Western

Originally from Jackson, Michigan, Hannah came to Western Michigan University with an interest in the arts. She initially auditioned for WMU’s acting program, drawn by the university’s strong reputation in creative fields. When that path didn’t work out, Hannah pivoted—choosing a direction that would provide long-term stability while still leaving room for creativity.

Today, Hannah is majoring in Business Analytics with a minor in Marketing and plans to graduate in May 2027. She enjoys the structure and logic that data brings, while marketing allows her to tap into her creative side.

Joining the OIT Help Desk

Hannah currently works as a student tech with WMU’s OIT Help Desk. She discovered the position through Handshake while searching for on-campus jobs related to technology. At the time, she was studying computer information systems and saw the role as a great opportunity to build technical experience.

In her role, Hannah helps support the campus community by:

  • Assisting with password resets
  • Helping users connect to WMU Wi-Fi
  • Installing and troubleshooting software such as SPSS
  • Providing friendly, professional customer service

A typical day includes supporting students, faculty, and staff with common technology issues, while also enjoying downtime to work on coursework when things are quiet.

Building Skills for the Future

Working in IT has helped Hannah develop skills that extend beyond technology. She credits her role at the Help Desk with strengthening her customer service, communication, and problem-solving abilities—skills that directly support her future career in analytics and business.

The job has also exposed her to new tools, software, and professional conversations about resumes, cover letters, and career paths.

Life Beyond Work and Class

Outside of work and school, Hannah enjoys reading—especially fantasy novels—playing video games, and listening to music. Her current favorites include games like Deltarune, with plans to check out Hollow Knight, a popular recommendation among her Help Desk coworkers.

Musical interests range from indie rock to K-pop, making for a daily soundtrack that keeps her energized between classes and shifts.

Hannah is also involved on campus as a member of Out for Business, an RSO within the Haworth College of Business that creates a supportive space for LGBTQ+ students. She is also interested in joining the Business Technology Network in the future.

Looking Ahead

Hannah’s academic goal is to graduate with at least a 3.70 GPA and land a well-paying job that allows her to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal interests. Her experience with WMU’s IT department has helped her feel more prepared for what comes next—both professionally and personally.
