Reading Placement

At WMU, we believe you should have a choice in the courses you take and what is appropriate for your level of reading skill. The process we use to help you and our advisors choose whether a Reading skills class (LS 1040) is right for you is Self-Directed Placement.

You can look at the guide below based on SAT/ACT scores and high school GPA to see what we recommend for enrolling in Literacy Studies (LS) 1040 or not. The LS 1040 course is a 2-credit hour class in which the two credits count toward your semester status, but the two credits do not count toward graduation from WMU. LS 1040 is designed to provide you with strategic literacy skills for academic success. The areas of focus include developing your academic vocabulary, critically understanding texts and strengthening your reading and studying practices.

Your suggested reading placement is based on a combination of ACT-Reading or SAT-Verbal scores and high school GPA. Follow the table below to determine your suggested placement.
