Faculty Fellow Positions:

Research administration and development fellow

Examples of potential areas of focus:

  • Development of an undergraduate research support structure across WMU that links programs, encourages student participation and maximizes the strategic use of funds to support students.
  • Optimize the efficiency of the management and oversight of internal grant programs by working with the OVPR team on department programs and collaboratively with the Research Policy Council on their programs.
  • Develop training initiatives for faculty and administrative staff. Building upon the newly revised and initiated programs in OVPR, help to determine the best practices to support a research culture and support faculty and staff.
  • Process of development and submission of the WMU Facilities and Administrative Rate proposal.

Research compliance and facilities fellow

Examples of potential areas of focus:

  • Oversee a full review of the research Conflict of Interest process at WMU, benchmarking to peers and establishing a rigorous and efficient process.
  • Oversee the analysis of the best utilization of the animal facility at WMU, mechanisms to determine optimal fees and changes to promote research and education.
  • Assess best practices in compliance to promote high quality research in a compliant and ethical way. 

Application Process

The Office of the Vice President is pleased to request applications for two Faculty Fellow positions. Faculty fellows will complete projects in close collaboration with the Vice President for Research, senior leadership within OVPR and research leaders at WMU to address specific goals, objectives and strategies related to those described below preferably Fall 2019 through Summer II 2020 but for a total of 1 year. Fellows will be expected to disseminate their findings via final programs, proposals or processes as appropriate to the OVPR team, senior research leadership and other relevant constituencies. Fellows will have the opportunity to attend one research administration meeting (such as FDP, SRA, etc.) to represent WMU funded by OVPR and will have the opportunity to learn about research leadership and administration. Fellows will get exposure to all aspects of OVPR including compliance, pre-award, post-award, contracting, research development technology transfer and operations.

All board-appointed faculty, of any rank, with research experience are invited to apply. Each faculty fellow will receive an 11 percent non-instructional summer I and II appointment. Funds will be provided on behalf of the fellows to cover their salary in the fall and spring semester at an agreed upon effort of from 30 to 40 percent.
