Overview
Western Michigan University’s doctoral program in counselor education provides advanced preparation for professional counselors working in mental health and school settings, while also preparing graduates for faculty roles in colleges and universities. The program’s highest priority is developing counselor educators and supervisors who are ethical, reflective, and effective leaders. Accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, the doctorate emphasizes comprehensive clinical, academic, and leadership competencies. Doctoral students are expected to demonstrate strong individual and group counseling skills, a solid theoretical foundation, advanced multicultural counseling competence, and well-developed teaching and supervision abilities. Students also build research expertise, leadership capacity, and an understanding of curriculum development, program administration, and educational systems. Active involvement in departmental, college, university, and professional association activities is expected. This program is not designed to meet licensure requirements for psychologists. Applicants typically hold or are completing a master’s degree program.
