2026 Opportunity Within the Classroom Conference at Western Michigan University

Empowering Students for Academic Success: Where Community Creates Opportunity Through Education

The Opportunity Within the Classroom Conference is hosted annually as a collaborative effort between the State of Michigan's King-Chávez-Parks (KCP) Initiative and the state's public and independent colleges and universities. It provides an annual forum for faculty, administration, staff, and postsecondary education supporters to review current research findings, annual retention outcome data, best practice strategies, and specific KCP developed retention strategies positively impacting equality of opportunity and degree achievement of KCP-targeted students.

For more information, contact the State KCP Initiative Office by email at @email or visit the KCP Opportunity Within the Classroom webpage.

Welcome to the 32nd Annual Opportunity Within the Classroom Conference. Also, this year, 2026, marks the 40th year of the KCP Initiative’s existence. We have a lot to celebrate. Please plan to join us on the campus of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo on March 15th-17th. We look forward to our time together as we continue to explore, promote, and share effective retention strategies for academically and economically disadvantaged students.
