General Readmission

Students on probation or extended probation who fail to achieve at least a 2.00 grade point average for the enrollment period, or students on final probation who fail to achieve a 2.00 overall GPA, will be dismissed from Western Michigan University. Academic standing policies are available from the Registrar’s Office.

Additionally, students who take a course required in their program for the third time and are unable to obtain the minimum required grade will be dismissed from the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and/or their academic program.

For Students Who Have Been Academically Dismissed.

WMU students who are academically dismissed typically will not be readmitted for at least one fifteen-week semester. The University, and the CEAS, will require evidence that the causes of prior academic difficulty have been removed prior to making a positive readmission decision.

Academic forgiveness

Students who last attended WMU four or more years ago may apply for academic forgiveness. For more information on this, contact the Registrar’s Office.

Applying for readmission

Students must complete the Returning Student Application through the WMU Office of Admissions. At a minimum, students must complete the Returning Student Application, provide a personal statement detailing their plan for academic success, and transcripts from institutions attended, if any, during their time away from WMU. Readmission is not guaranteed and is only granted on the approval of the academic department of the student's intended major. Readmission during a summer session is rarely recommended.

To be considered for readmission, the application should be completed by August 1 for fall readmission and by December 1 for spring readmission.

Submit official transcripts from any institution you have attended since your dismissal from WMU to:

FOR Dismissed students

College of Engineering and Applied Sciences students who are dismissed from the college following their final attempt at a required course in their program should meet with an Advisor for the new program of study they wish to pursue to change their major. Students who would like to try and return to CEAS should meet with the appropriate CEAS Academic Advisor prior to applying for readmission to the college. It is recommended most students enroll in a semester of classes outside the CEAS to explore their options prior to applying for readmission to a CEAS program; in rare cases immediate readmission may be considered.
