Summer is a time for growth off campus

Students in the WMU College of Fine Arts might not have as many classes on campus in the summer, but they grow their skills throughout the world participating in internships, workshops, study abroad and professional conferences. Check out just some of the opportunities our students participated in this summer in this blog post and see some of their experiences in our IGTV.

Frostic School of Art

Emma Wiest is a junior in the Graphic Design program and interned as an instructional designer at Maestro, a design agency in Kalamazoo. 

Product Design students were across the U.S. this summer putting their courses into action. Kylie Stroub finished up her second year of interning at Fabri-Kal. Bobby Snell interned at Wahl clippers and worked as part of the design team on products that will be put into production. Aisha Thaj worked with Tekna. Scott Bridges was at IDA Designs. And Madison Dempster interned at shoe designer Wolf and Shepherd in LA.

Department of Dance

Will Brighton stagecraft apprentice at the American Dance Festival in North Carolina. 

The WMU chapter of Movement Exchange went on a trip to Panama to teach in youth dance programs as well as exchange classes with local college students.

School of Music

Junior voice student, Leo Walker worked as the Publicity Director for the Ad Astra Music Festival in Russell, Kansas.

Graduate student Eddie Codrington studied at the Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music.

Many students studying with trombone professor Steve Wolfinbarger attended the International Trombone Festival at Ball State University.

A group of jazz students including Grayson Nye, Eddie Codrington, Ethan Bouwsma and Matthew Epperson traveled to Columbia as part of a cultural exchange with the country. They performed and taught master classes in a variety of cities during a week-long jazz camp.

Department of Theatre

Lizzie was the Properties Designer at the Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts.

Enzo Santiago, Ben Marshall, and Ryan worked together as performers at the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre. Emily Timmer, senior in the design technology program, production intern at WOODTV 8.

Costume designer Evan Petrow attended the costume commission student with USITT at the Arts University of Bournemouth studying costume history and historical hat making.

Students traveled to Warwick, Stratford-Upon-Avon, and London for the Study Abroad Theatre Intensive. They toured and saw shows at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, The National Theatre, The Palace Theatre, Arcola Theatre and more. They shadowed backstage at performances of Come From Away and Wicked on the West End. They visited several museums and they saw some of the best theatres England has to offer while learning from professionals from many facets of the industry abroad.
