What is Differential Tuition?

Differential tuition at WMU is how the university allocates funds to support specialized programs and initiatives that require additional resources beyond what is covered by general tuition revenue. In the College of Fine Arts, this approach allows for the creation of an enhanced educational experience for students like you.

As a student in one of the College of Fine Arts programs, you will have access to specialized facilities, small class sizes, and a range of other resources designed to foster your artistic and academic growth. These resources are made possible in part through the differential tuition structure.

Specialized facilities are an essential component of what we do. Whether you are studying visual arts, design, music, dance or theatre, you will have access to contemporary studios, practice rooms, performance venues, and other spaces that are tailored to your discipline. These facilities provide an environment that nurtures creativity, collaboration and technical skill development.

What differential tuition provides

  • Attending and traveling to conferences
  • Paid positions for students
  • Steinway maintenance
  • Guest artists and lectures from industry professionals
  • Live music accompaniment for classes
  • Technology support, computer labs, shops, etc.
  • Specialized staffing for labs and other program support
  • Software that you will need for coursework
  • Student trips in and out of Michigan
  • Materials in some classes (printing is not covered but you will receive print credits toward that cost)

What if I can't afford differential tuition?

We recognize the importance of providing financial assistance to students who demonstrate financial need. That is why a percentage of the funds generated through the differential tuition structure is allocated for need-based scholarships.

When you complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), your financial need is determined based on various factors such as your family's income, assets, and household size. If you meet the criteria for need-based aid, you will be eligible for both university-wide scholarships and scholarships offered specifically by your department within the College of Fine Arts. Department scholarships are often substantial enough to cover the entire cost of differential tuition, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder your access to a high-quality education.
