Honoring 38 Years of Music: WMU to Host Retirement Concert for Steve Wolfinbarger

After 38 years of shaping the next generation of trombonists, Dr. Steve Wolfinbarger will retire from Western Michigan University this spring. In recognition of his impact on students, colleagues, and the broader music community, WMU will host a retirement celebration concert on Monday, March 31, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dalton Center Recital Hall. The concert will feature a reunion trombone choir comprised of former students, along with performances of newly composed works and a special guest appearance by internationally renowned trombonist Yu Tamaki Hoso of Japan.
Wolfinbarger, a longtime professor of trombone, has influenced hundreds of students over nearly four decades at the university. His teaching and mentorship have helped many alumni pursue successful careers in music education, performance, and composition. More than 60 former students are expected to return to WMU to perform in the alumni trombone choir during the event.
The concert program will include new compositions and arrangements by former WMU studio members Chris Van Hof and Chris Evan Hass, as well as a world premiere from Hollywood composer Greg Turner.
Wolfinbarger’s legacy will continue through the establishment of the Steve Wolfinbarger Endowment Fund for Trombone Studies, which will support the university’s trombone program for future students. An anonymous donor has provided the initial funding and has pledged to match additional gifts up to $10,000 through July 1, 2025.
The concert is free and open to the public, with alumni, colleagues, and supporters encouraged to attend. Donations to the Steve Wolfinbarger Endowment Fund can be made online, with contributions eligible for the matching opportunity.
Wolfinbarger’s retirement marks the conclusion of a distinguished 38-year career at WMU, but through music and philanthropy, his influence will continue for generations to come.
