CHHS marks 50 years with yearlong celebration
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Western Michigan University’s College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of preparing leaders, strengthening communities, and advancing health and human services across Michigan and beyond.
This milestone year highlights CHHS’s legacy of connection, impact and growth, honoring the students, alumni, faculty, staff, patients and community members who have shaped the college since its founding.
“Over the past 50 years, our college has built a strong foundation rooted in collaboration and service,” says Dr. Lillian Smith, dean of the College of Health and Human Services. “This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate the people and partnerships that define us while looking ahead to the next chapter of innovation and impact.”
Founded to meet growing workforce and community needs, CHHS has evolved into a dynamic college offering a wide range of programs that prepare graduates to serve in critical roles across healthcare, public health, social services and related fields. Through hands-on learning, community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration, CHHS continues to address complex challenges and improve quality of life.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary, CHHS is hosting a yearlong series of events and engagement opportunities, inviting alumni, students and community members to reconnect, share their stories and help shape the future of the college. These events provide opportunities to expand professional networks, celebrate achievements and highlight the ongoing work of the CHHS community.
The celebration also underscores CHHS’s forward-looking commitment to innovation, inclusivity and student success. From expanding experiential learning opportunities to strengthening community partnerships, the college remains focused on preparing all graduates to lead and serve in a rapidly changing world.
“Looking back at our history fills us with immense pride, but looking ahead at where we are going is absolutely exhilarating,” says Dr. Christopher Briggs, director of the WMU Unified Clinics and Center for Disability Services. “We are aggressively broadening our training opportunities and enriching our experiential education, ensuring our students learn at the absolute forefront of care. By doing so, we aren’t just sustaining our mission—we are scaling new heights, expanding our clinical reach and delivering world-class service directly to the communities we touch.”
As CHHS enters its next 50 years, it will continue to build its legacy by fostering collaboration, advancing knowledge, and creating meaningful impact throughout the region and beyond.
