Volleyball coach to speak about leadership at community breakfast series

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Western Michigan University's volleyball team and its coach's approach to empowerment and leadership will be the focus at the upcoming Mercantile Bank of Michigan Breakfast Speaker Series hosted by the Haworth College of Business.

Colleen Munson, WMU volleyball head coach, will give a presentation titled "Western Michigan Volleyball: Equip and Empower" at 8 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26, in 2150 Schneider Hall.

The event is free and open to the public and begins with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (269) 387-6059 or at wmich.edu/business/mercantile-rsvp. Free parking is available in Schneider Hall lot 72R.

Munson and WMU Volleyball Milestones

Munson joined the WMU volleyball program as head coach in 2005. Prior to taking the head coaching position at WMU, Munson served as assistant to former WMU head coach Cathy George from 1997-99, and then was head coach at East Carolina University from 2000-05. Munson earned her master’s degree in physical education from WMU in 2001.

Munson was named MAC Coach of the Year in 2014 and has led the team through multiple victories, both athletic and academic. Under Munson the team has a 93-23 record at home and has gone on to win two MAC titles. The team has also won multiple American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Awards for having a team grade point average of 3.30 or higher. Munson's teams have been recognized by the NCAA for ranking in the top 10 percent of all volleyball programs in academic progress rate, which holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their students through a team-based metric.
