KALAMAZOO, Mich.— Shahriar Imran, an international student at Western Michigan University, is growing professionally almost as quickly as his field does. Originally from Noakhali, Bangladesh, the senior studying computer information systems (CIS) is immersing himself in his education to become a well-rounded data scientist.

Anticipating the career ahead of him, Imran is looking forward to embracing his academic experiences.

“The most exciting aspect of pursuing a degree in data science is the dynamic nature of the field. It constantly evolves with new technologies and methodologies, making every day a learning opportunity. Analyzing complex real-word data sets and deriving meaningful insights is particularly exhilarating because it combines my passion for technology with my interest in business processes.”

Appreciating the intricacies of both his IT-focused courses and general business courses, Imran has begun to understand the importance of applying classroom material in professional settings.

“Classes like Cloud Computing Applications, Systems Analysis and Design and Visual Analytics have been particularly impactful, providing theoretical knowledge and practical skills through case studies and project-based learning. This hands-on approach has deepened my understanding of data structures, algorithms and database management, which is essential for my pursuit of data science. It has also been enriching to learn about IT’s ethical and societal implications in the modern business world, preparing me to be a responsible and insightful data scientist.”

Beyond the curriculum, the faculty at WMU Haworth have provided Imran with firsthand accounts of the career field, deepening his education with personal experiences. “The faculty, who often bring their industry experience into the classroom, have provided me with insights into the evolving landscape of data science and its applications in different business domains,” says Imran. “Professors such as Victoria Fleenor and Dr. KC Chen have helped shaped my education into everything I hoped. The blend of academic rigor and practical wisdom equips me with the right tools to excel in this ever-changing field.”

Outside of his academic experiences, Imran finds himself employing his business skills in his co-curricular activities. As a member of the Business Analytics and Information Technology group and the Bangladeshi Student Association, both registered student organizations at WMU, Imran finds ways to challenge himself professionally.

Having served as the sports coordinator for the Bangladeshi Student association, Imran says, “It's not just about organizing sports events—it involves leadership, planning and teamwork skills. This role has helped me develop a balanced approach toward problem-solving and time management; these skills are vital in any professional setting, especially in my field, where project management and team collaboration are essential. These experiences have enriched my college life, providing a well-rounded education that extends beyond academic learning.”

As Imran continues down his undergraduate path, he reflects not only on his time at WMU but also on his experience in a new country.

“Being an international student in the United States has helped me gain global perspectives on data applications in business, which I believe will add a unique dimension to my professional capabilities. Being far from my family and experiencing a new culture has taught me how to navigate obstacles and turn them into stepping stones. Each new challenge I’ve faced has only fueled my passion for making my professional goals a reality. My journey at WMU has been a blend of academic rigor and practical application. I intend to continue this path, constantly seeking opportunities to learn and grow professionally.”
