Sanford Center Workshop: Roommates and Money—Managing Shared Expenses Without the Drama
Living with roommates can reduce costs and build community, but it can also create financial stress when expectations and responsibilities are unclear. This workshop helps students develop practical strategies for successfully managing shared finances while maintaining healthy roommate relationships.
Participants will learn how to divide rent and utilities fairly, manage shared household expenses, create roommate agreements, track payments and communicate effectively about money. The workshop will also address common challenges such as late payments, unequal spending habits, security deposits, lease responsibilities, shared subscriptions and conflict resolution.
Students will explore budgeting tools, payment apps and real-life scenarios that demonstrate how financial misunderstandings can impact housing stability and personal relationships. By the end of the workshop, participants will be better prepared to navigate shared living arrangements confidently, reduce conflict and establish healthy financial boundaries with roommates.
This event is for Haworth College of Business students only and is approved for a SPuRS Foundational Level - Personal & Interpersonal Knowledge activity.
