Colleen Stano, director of academic advising, was awarded the Service in Academic Advising Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of academic advising, furthering the mission of advising, dedication to student success and outstanding interpersonal skills, among others.

Alyshia Garrett, academic advisor senior, received the Students’ Choice Award, which recognizes commitment that goes above and beyond the advising job description. Students voted for Garrett based on her amazing ability to connect with them, providing outstanding advising, advocacy and motivation.

Garrett’s own experience as a student at WMU has given her valuable insight into what students need and how to be their advocate. She says, “I have a B.B.A. in finance, but during my time as an undergrad I didn’t do all the things that add up to student success, like meeting with an advisor every semester, going to the career center early and getting involved in a student organization. I was in their shoes, so I empathize with their situation and want to make sure they know I’m always there for them.”

As far as how to handle the difficult issue of fitting the right classes in the right places she says, “I love the puzzle of scheduling! It’s so satisfying when you’re able to get everything to fall into place just right for the student.”

Stano also has natural abilities that make her a great fit for her advising role. “I thrive on answering questions, problem solving, creating opportunities and facilitating change. I love my role since I get to do all of this every day in the advising office!”

In addition to those stellar skills, she has a passion for helping students succeed. “I truly enjoy helping adult learners navigate their unique challenges to achieve their educational goals. I didn’t have an academic advisor during my college journey, and I know the benefits a good advisor can have for student success. I want that experience for all of our current and future students at WMU Haworth.”

WMU Haworth is fortunate to have advisors who are all dedicated to helping students succeedand tailor their academic path to their individual needs.

Stano offers these words of advice to students, “I know it can be tough to hear ‘no’ or face setbacks in your plans but remember that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Meeting with your academic advisor is a powerful step toward achieving your goals, and the sooner you do, the more support you’ll receive on your journey. Embrace the chance to gain valuable insights and resources. Together, we’ll turn obstacles into steppingstones to your success!”
