WMU business student honored as a top leader in Michigan
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Senior human resource management major Madison Petroff from Roseville, Michigan, is many things—a first-generation college student, an intern, a mentor to fellow students and a recognized leader in DECA at WMU. Recently named Michigan Collegiate DECA Member of the Year, this Western Michigan University student has an impressive resume—but even more noteworthy is her ability to help others tap into their talents and reach their full potential as student leaders.
Serving as president of DECA at WMU, a student organization offering professional development, fellowship and case competition opportunities, has been one of the most rewarding parts of Petroff’s time at WMU Haworth. “I started as a founding member my freshman year. Being able to grow personally and professionally alongside the organization has been the highlight of my college career. Moving into the role of president, I focused on strengthening community and engagement, as well as creating opportunities for members to thrive. Seeing the organization become more active and connected has been incredibly meaningful.”
Graduating in spring 2026, Petroff is leaving the chapter in a great place with 61 active members and strong programming. In addition, 33 of the chapter’s members qualified to compete at case competitions at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, in April 2026.
“As one of the founding members of DECA at WMU, Madison has played a pivotal role in building the chapter’s foundation and culture from the ground up,” says Scott VanAvery, chapter co-advisor. “In a short amount of time, she has also grown into an inspiring and accomplished business professional whose dedication and leadership continue to elevate those around her. Her commitment to excellence has left a lasting impact on DECA at WMU and set an incredible example for future members to follow.”
A resume focused on emotional intelligence
Petroff devotes her time at WMU to making a difference. In addition to her role as president of DECA at WMU, she also works in the Zhang Career Center as a peer educator where she helps students develop their career readiness skills and their resumes. Serving as the student lead for TechNext, an immersive experience that takes students to companies in Silicon Valley, she onboards students and helps address the questions and uncertainties that come up before a significant professional experience. She was a First-Year Experience mentor, supporting students in their transition to WMU Haworth. She has also interned at Meijer and BNY in human resources. Petroff placed third in the event planning competition at the DECA International Career Development Conference in 2025, with partner George LaForce from Flat Rock, Michigan.
