Western Michigan University 2017 drum line auditions will be held on Saturday, May 6 and 13, from 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. Both days are required, please do not plan for one day or the other.
For more information, contact Landon Ewers, Bronco Marching Band percussion coordinator, at email@example.com.
The season's schedule is available on the Drum Line Schedule page. Please note that days in the spring and summer may be subject to change.
Auditions are based on technique, sound quality and rhythmic consistency. You do not need to prepare an individual audition piece. Potential members will prove these skills by implementing them by playing material from the packet in a group ensemble setting. Individual auditions will be used if needed.
Audition Day 1—Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m.
We utilize a two day process to audition prospective members. It is important to note that anyone intending to audition must attend both audition days. The auditions will last the entire day with a break for lunch (on your own). Most of the evaluations will take place in the ensemble setting; however, some individual auditions may also be utilized. We will make cuts as necessary and steer people toward the instrument on which they are most likely to receive a spot and then post the call backs list. Candidates will be evaluated on technique, level of preparation on the exercises and ability to mark time confidently and accurately. Toward the end of the day, we will discuss pre-game, cadences, drum cheers and stand cheers, as well as any music that may be available for the first show.
Audition Day 2—Final Round- Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m.
The final round is for call backs only. Candidates will be assessed on their level of preparation of all drum line repertoire as discussed during the first round. We will quickly work through all repertoire and the most prepared call backs will receive positions. Sight reading will be used to break any ties. By the end of the day we will finalize the drum line members and place alternates in their respective positions. Students who win positions will then be expected to attend any summer sessions and arrive at band camp prepared and ready to rehearse.
Registration for the workshop and audition days will be on the BMB website. All equipment is provided, except you must bring your own sticks.
What to bring to auditions
