Financial Planning, Competition and Success

Shane Brown, B.B.A.'08, a motivated self-starter, has been working at Edward Jones Investments since graduation, building an impressive client list as a financial advisor. While Edward Jones is a leader in the financial services industry and a large organization, the company still offers a personal approach to financial planning. Advisors periodically meet with clients individually and develop a plan for their finances and suggest appropriate investments.

How did Brown land his position and achieve success at Edward Jones? “Hard work, to put it simply. I am willing to do things in the business world that would typically take someone out of their comfort zone and that they might try to avoid. My willingness to do those things has opened doors for me that I never even knew existed,” Brown says.

Establishing a financial planning practice is essentially starting a new business from scratch, putting in long hours and seeking out new clients. “It takes a person who is passionate about financial planning and extremely resilient and driven to find success in this field,” notes Brown.

Ambition comes naturally to Brown. “America is filled with some of the most brilliant and business savvy minds in the world, and competition at all levels is growing increasingly stronger in every industry.” Brown expects to compete to keep his success and knows that competition only serves to sharpen his skills.

Brown regularly returns to Western to recruit current Broncos to work at Edward Jones and encourages other alumni to do the same.
