HyFlex MBA program: focusing on the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ in business
Jon Hoadley is having a great experience in the WMU HyFlex MBA program, learning about everything from researching U.S. market entry for an international business in his first marketing course to taking a deep dive into accountancy, finance and information systems—all in the context of how to manage and problem solve effectively and authentically.
Why did you choose to pursue your MBA at WMU? What value has the program offered you so far?
As someone who has run a small business and worked extensively with the appropriations process in state government, I was interested in the WMU MBA program to enhance my skills and core competencies. The HyFlex learning environment made the program the right fit for me as I balance work, consulting and staying involved in my community.
I’ve been impressed by how available the professors are to answer questions and go in-depth on topics. Whether it is a simple question or a longer conversation, the professors go above and beyond to make sure we’re walking away with a better understanding.
What benefits have you gotten from the HyFlex learning environment?
The HyFlex format has been ideal during a time when we’re all balancing health, winter weather and schedules. My marketing class hosted online sessions with experts from around the world and also transitioned to in-person meetings. Being able to pick the style and method of learning for any particular week has been an incredible benefit.
Describe something that you plan to pursue professionally that you may not have considered prior to starting your MBA.
I’ve been impressed at the combination of “how” and “why” I’m seeing so far in the program. I’m excited to leave equipped with specific skills—the “how” necessary to implement best practices in the business environment. I’m also excited to explore the “why” behind the choices businesses make on structure, culture and leadership.
What has been your favorite course so far and what were your biggest takeaways?
I loved my first marketing course, Marketing for Decision Makers, so much that I signed up for an independent study to continue our research and learn even more. Dr. Zondag made the material engaging, brought international experts and CEOs into the classroom and gave us substantive work impacting a real business. With the independent study, I’m excited to conduct original research and take part in a variety of hands-on experiences.
How has WMU made the process of pursuing an MBA convenient for you?
WMU’s new HyFlex format, supportive staff and professors all make the MBA program convenient and engaging. From the application to enrolling to course planning, the MBA program at WMU is ready to work with students to help them succeed!
