KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Lorena Vazquez, a senior at Western Michigan University, is stepping outside the box to achieve her goals. The digital marketing and leadership and business strategy (LBS) student from Chicago, Illinois, is putting in the work at the Haworth College of Business in order to foster a successful career.

With a deep passion for her profession, Vazquez is eager to break out into her field.

“I chose digital marketing because it offers a dynamic, in-demand, and rewarding path with diverse opportunities, competitive salaries, and the potential for continuous growth and creativity. I enjoy problem-solving and am passionate about connecting with audiences in the digital age. I’m looking forward to working hands-on with a team in a real-world situation. I am excited to learn the ins and outs of a company and how I can contribute to the bigger picture. I have high expectations for myself because I want to create a path that I’m proud of.”

WMU Haworth has helped Vazquez maintain her expectations through the many resources offered to students.

“I’ve realized the most impactful resources are the seemingly little things.  For example, the relationship I’ve built with my advisor, Colleen Stano, has been integral to my success—she is always helping me rethink success strategies. Similarly, the IT staff members in the computer lab are always helpful with printing and technical difficulties I may encounter. The Zhang Career Center has assisted me in a variety of ways—commenting on my resume, preparing me for interviews and informing me about which companies are coming to the college. The little things every day add up, and I have not taken them for granted!”

When reflecting on her growth at WMU Haworth, Vazquez speaks to the impact the LBS program has had on her as a student and professional. “LBS changed my life,” she says. “I was not used to being in any practicum, let alone one that would turn me into a leader. I have a few years of managerial background, but this was a game changer for me. I learned how to work with other WMU students and experienced hands-on problem-solving techniques. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s extremely rewarding!”

Finding community among her peers has been an important piece of Vazquez’s time at WMU Haworth.

“It's nice to know that my professors and peers know me and are rooting for me. They help provide direction when I feel lost. I’ve tried to build meaningful relationships and am grateful to have like-minded people in my corner to create a strong support system.”

As she plans to graduate in spring of 2026, Vazquez is hoping to find a job closer to home and climb the professional ladder. She’s set the goal of becoming a CEO while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
