KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Third year MBA student Emily Styburski has reshaped her future at Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business. Originally from Muskegon, Michigan, Styburski has set her sights on a career with a meaningful impact.

Earning her undergraduate degree in natural resource management from Grand Valley State University in 2020, Styburski entered a workforce altered by the pandemic.

“I graduated during the peak of the pandemic and quickly discovered the challenges of entering a disrupted job market. To support my husband through his graduate studies in finance, I pursued upper-level retail management roles leading teams in high-profile stores within Tractor Supply and West Marine. Once he completed his degree, I turned my focus toward my own professional aspirations,” says Styburski.

Seeking a career beyond the sales floor, she began her MBA journey at WMU.

“I took a leap by applying for a position at Eaton and was fortunate to be recognized for my drive, adaptability and diverse experience. I was hired as a data analyst and product manager, and my role has since expanded to include global strategy initiatives as well.”

As she stepped into her new career, WMU Haworth supported Styburski while she navigated a new passion.

“What ultimately drew me to business, and especially to product strategy, was a fascination with the unseen mechanics that shape consumer experiences. During my time in retail management, I was captivated by the strategic decisions behind the scenes. I admired the thoughtfulness and precision behind making decisions and felt inspired to be a part of that process. Pursuing my MBA at WMU has allowed me to channel that curiosity into a career that’s both intellectually satisfying, and purpose driven.”

Business has become a space where Styburski can apply strategic thinking, leadership and data-driven decision making to influence outcomes in a way that feels creative and meaningful for her.

With her career developing in real-time, she is able to align her education with what is unfolding in her professional life. She says, “I am looking forward to my upcoming course in trade and global business, especially since my responsibilities have recently expanded to include global strategy. I also can’t overlook the value of my data analytics course, which has strengthened my ability to interpret complex information and make informed decisions. Overall, the program has been very transformative, equipping me with the skills and confidence to grow beyond my current role.”

Styburski plans to graduate this spring and can easily see her growth during the program.

“I am forever grateful for the opportunity my MBA has given me—not just to advance my career, but to build a life that feels truly fulfilling. The program’s support and flexibility have allowed me to gain professional expertise while still nurturing the parts of myself outside of work. I’ve been able to still pursue my hobbies and spend time with my family, which keeps me inspired and balanced. WMU has empowered me to take control of my future, equipping me with the tools, confidence, and perspective to make a meaningful impact.”
