Michelle Rao, B.B.A.'99, serves as a program purchasing manager for General Motors. The integrated supply management graduate is on the front line of the company’s push to launch the new electric GMC HUMMER EV in fall 2021. Rao’s focus is on collaborating with engineering, design, finance and other departments to source vehicle components and then ensuring part availability and supplier launch readiness.

Ready, set, launch.

The GMC HUMMER EV is poised to make waves in the vehicle industry as the first zero emissions, all-electric truck. “Everything about this project is extraordinarily exciting,” says Rao. “The vehicle, its capabilities, the amazing team that I’m part of, and perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to deliver a truly first-class vehicle to our customers.”

The GMC HUMMER EV will be produced in Detroit’s Factory Zero Assembly Center, extending the longstanding and positive partnership the company has enjoyed with the city of Detroit. General Motors invested more than $2 billion in the facility to prepare. “This was the single largest investment GM has ever made in a plant,” says Rao. “Revitalizing this location has resulted in more employment opportunities, more contractors and more revenue for the community. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to create more than 2,200 U.S. manufacturing jobs.”

The future is electric

“GM’s vision for the future is a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion. Electrification will play an essential role in accomplishing this vision,” she says. “The transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles will take time, but their range is increasing, the pricing is improving and the charging infrastructure is growing.”

Leading the charge

Since graduation, Rao has relished the roles that her Haworth College of Business degree made possible. “The integrated supply management program is highly regarded nationally. The curriculum is a unique combination of engineering, business and data analytics courses. I feel that my education has always set me apart.”

As the launch date nears, Rao and her teammates have adjusted to working remotely, while keeping their camaraderie and team morale at the forefront. “It’s important now more than ever to make sure that everyone feels supported and empowered during these uncertain times,” explains Rao. “I believe in open communication and staying flexible.”
