Whole cores are ideal for sampling to determine rock components and properties.

  • Slabbed cores layed out

    Slabbed cores show rock structures.

  • Cuttings in glass vials

Cuttings in glass vials are readily examined.

  • Mounted cuttings are displayed on top of boxed whole cores

The Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education at Western Michigan University is committed to preserving, researching and utilizing our collections of cores, samples and data for both educational and research purposes. These are essential to supporting economic development and providing societal benefits to our citizens. Currently, they are being used to provide geological information about our Critical Minerals and Rare Earth Elements, for which we are heavily dependent upon foreign sources. We are also committed to making these materials accessible both on-site and online:

Disclaimer

Every effort is made to assure accuracy in our datasets. However, because of the number and size of our inventories, and because data has been entered by many people for a very long period of time, errors are unavoidable. As such, we continually check datasets when we use them in research and correct errors as soon as they are found. MGRRE provides this information as is and makes no guarantee or warranty concerning accuracy of the information contained in the datasets. Furthermore, MGRRE makes no warranties, either expressed or implied, as to the condition of the samples or of fitness of samples and data for any particular purpose. The burden for determining fitness for use lies entirely with the user. Although these data have been processed successfully on computers at MGRRE, no warranty, expressed or implied, is made by MGRRE regarding the use of these data on any other system, nor does the fact of distribution constitute or imply any such warranty.

We always appreciate it when users let us know if they suspect an error or if they have difficulty opening any files. Please call us at (269) 387-8633 to report any concerns.

Limitation of Liability

In no event shall MGRRE, the Michigan Geological Survey or Western Michigan University have any liability whatsoever for payment of any consequential, incidental, indirect, special or tort damages of any kind, including, but not limited to: the loss of profits arising out of the use of or reliance on the data contained in our data files; or arising out of the delivery, installation, operation or support by MGRRE, the Survey or the University.
