Instrumental Music Performance

The School of Music at Western Michigan University offers a Bachelor of Music in instrumental performance

This degree program provides a broad spectrum of performance opportunities and musical experiences to prepare exceptional students for a professional music career and beyond. It is tailored specifically for woodwind, brass, string, and percussion players. Students train directly with studio faculty throughout their time at Western.  

Graduates of the instrumental music performance program can be found performing on stages around the world as soloists and in orchestras, military bands, opera companies, and touring chamber ensembles. Additionally, they are working in music production, arts management, and the recording arts. Many continue their studies and teach at the collegiate level.

The instrumental music performance program requires a minimum of 126 credits, with 70% of coursework within the School of Music, and 30% in general studies. School of Music coursework includes:

  • Private lessons on your instrument with faculty

  • Large ensemble performance (band or orchestra)

  • Chamber ensemble performance

  • Performance opportunities at all levels, even for first-year students

  • Music theory, aural skills, and history

  • Composition and conducting classes

  2. Schedule an audition on a New Student Admissions Day (dates listed on the Apply page). 

  3. Prepare for your audition following the guidelines for your instrument or voice part.
