Bio:

Ruth Goveia, an avid pianist and music educator, expresses her musical passion through
performance, endless curiosity, and joyful discovery gathered from a diversified piano teaching
career. Her graduate study accomplishments in piano include a Doctor of Music (DM) degree in
piano from Indiana University and a Master of Music (MM) degree from the University of
Cincinnati. Her international experience extends to a Bachelor of Music degree with a bow
towards education [BMus (Ed)] from the University of the Free State (South Africa) as well as a
Performers Licentiate Diploma (LRSM) from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music
in the UK.

Throughout her music career, Ruth Goveia has been a dedicated and imaginative educator,
privileged to hold teaching positions at various institutions including Indiana University and
Albion College, and more recently, at Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College. In
South Africa, she taught at the universities of Pretoria, Kwa-Zulu Natal (Durban), and Free State
(Bloemfontein).

Her piano performances have featured at the Musica Viva Performance Series in Joliet, Illinois,
and for the Artur Balsam Chamber Music Project in Wabash, Indiana. She has also presented
guest solo recitals at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College, Albion College, and the
Heritage Concert Series in St. Joseph, Michigan. Additionally, she has performed extensively as
solo pianist in South Africa and as soloist with prominent South African orchestras. For many
years, she has relished collaborating with colleagues and musicians from diverse orchestral
backgrounds. This has not only allowed her to delve into traditional piano chamber music
repertoire but to experiment with unconventional instrumental combinations.

Her adjudication experience spans international and national piano competitions in South Africa,
as well as state and local competitions in Michigan and Indiana. Over the years, nurturing and
supporting young pianists has been a special joy for her. Some of her students have pursued
successful careers as performers, educators and effective music leaders in their communities.
Ruth Goveia’s esteemed piano mentors have included Edmund Battersby, Béla Siki, Frank
Weinstock, and Nils Kayser. Her love for chamber music started through her formative training
with Hungarian cellist Micu Szigeti and later with violist Peter Kamnitzer (La Salle Quartet). She
has been privileged to perform for and receive professional support from distinguished artists
such as Jean-Louis Hagenauer, Isabella Stengel, Steven de Groote and Dorothy DeLay
