Nathan Shook

Nathan Shook currently teaches tuba and euphonium at Western Michigan University. He received his Doctorate in Tuba Performance at the University of Michigan, where he studied with David Zerkel. He also received other graduate degrees in Tuba Performance and Chamber Music from U-M, and earned his bachelor’s in music education from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music. He has previously studied with Ken Heinlein, Craig Knox, John DiCesare, and Yasuhito Sugiyama.

Currently serving as the principal tuba for both Lakeside Symphony Orchestra and Rochester Symphony Orchestra, Shook has also performed with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Chamber Winds, the Erie Philharmonic, the Akron Symphony Orchestra, and the Flint Symphony Orchestra.

An advocate for educational music, Shook recorded the tuba edition of Diversify the Stand’s book of solos for students, “Winds of Change.” These recordings can be found on the Diversify the Stand YouTube channel.
