POSITION

Assistant Professor of Violin

Western Michigan University is seeking a term (non-tenure-track) professor of violin. The successful candidate will be a dynamic, engaging teacher/performer who shows a commitment to teaching and recruiting students across the range of majors offered by a comprehensive school of music. Ideal candidates will have a progressive view of music education that encompasses multiple genres and styles of performance. We are seeking candidates that have a commitment to racial justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion through programming and instruction.

SALARY

Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, with an excellent benefits package.

 

MAJOR DUTIES

· Teach applied violin to students across the range of music degrees that Western Michigan offers, including providing guidance and preparation for hearings, recitals, and oral exams

· Coach chamber music ensembles

· Lead orchestra sectionals and orchestra repertoire sessions

· Engage in service to the School, College, University, and profession

· Engage in recruitment activities to maintain a suitable number of violinists to support activities in the School

· Develop a strong musical presence within the Kalamazoo community

· Collaborate with other faculty

· Other teaching and non-teaching assignments determined by school and area needs and applicant qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

· Master’s degree in music performance from an accredited school

· Successful college teaching experience

· Professional experience as a solo, chamber, and/or orchestral performer

· Ability to provide a vision for a successful violin studio and string area given the programs offered at Western Michigan University

· Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills

· Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, professional activity, recruitment, and service

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Doctorate degree in music from an accredited school

· Substantial demonstrated success in teaching and recruitment at the college level

· Significant experience and success as a solo, chamber, and orchestral performer

· Experience with technology for teaching, communication and social media applications

· Preference may be given to applicants with an orchestral conducting background, music education related experiences or degrees, and/or knowledge/application of alternative music genres, improvisation, or composition

 

SCHOOL OF MUSIC

The School of Music, along with the Frostic School of Art, and the Departments of Dance and Theatre, is a part of the College of Fine Arts. The School of Music has 36 full-time faculty and 12 staff, more than 500 music majors, and NASM accreditation. Degree programs include Bachelor and Master degrees with majors in performance, music education, composition, music therapy, jazz studies, multimedia arts technology, the Bachelor of Musical Arts (interdisciplinary), Bachelor of Arts, and the accelerated Master of Arts.
