Faculty Recital: Carlos López, Bassoon

Mexican bassoonist Carlos M. López (WMU faculty) began his studies at the School of Music of the National Autonomous University of Mexico before obtaining degrees from The Joyce and Henry Schwob School of Music and the University of Iowa, where he was the teaching assistant for the bassoon studio. Carlos has won prizes in numerous solo and chamber music competitions across Mexico and the United States. He served as second bassoon of the Lagrange Symphony Orchestra (Ga.) and has performed with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, Columbus Symphony Orchestra (Ga.), Columbus Ballet Orchestra (Ga.) in the United States and UNAM Philharmonic and IPN Symphony in Mexico City.
University Symphony Orchestra with Zekai Chen, Violin Soloist

Under conductor Bruce Uchimura, the University Symphony performs orchestral masterworks, features internationally recognized and WMU faculty soloists, and collaborates with the WMU Grand Chorus and Department of Dance to present their season in Miller Auditorium and the Dalton Center Recital Hall. Orchestra members perform with WMU opera and musical theatre productions, and the orchestra has performed at high schools, colleges, and various performance venues throughout Michigan.Concert will feature Stulberg Silver Medalist Zekai Chen, Violin Soloist.Bruce Uchimura, Music Director.
Guest Artist Recital: Leo Sussman, Flute

Flutist Leo Sussman grew up playing chamber music in living rooms and gigging with a salsa band in San Francisco. Now based in Ithaca, NY, he delights in breathing life into new music and producing imaginative community-based arts projects that foster conversation and connection. Some recent exploits include coding tactile electroacoustic installations in Max/MSP, recording a new work for 12 flutists by Julia Wolfe, and performing Stravinsky’s Firebird at Burning Man.
Guest Artist Recital: Ilan Morgenstern, Bass Trombone

Hailed by the International Trombone Association Journal for his “rhythmically driving, technically flawless, and unfailingly dynamic and exciting" playing, Bass Trombonist Ilan Morgenstern is a unique voice in his field. A native of Rehovot, Israel, Ilan Morgenstern is currently the Bass Trombonist of the Vancouver Symphony.
University Jazz Lab Band

The University Jazz Lab Band is dedicated to the well-prepared performance of big band charts where careful attention is given to style and detail. Literature includes both traditional and contemporary jazz works, and the ensemble is also available for the reading and performance of student compositions and arrangements. An active on- and off-campus performance schedule is maintained. Membership is open to all Western Michigan University students by audition.Carlo De Rosa, Director.
