Latinx and Latin American Studies minor

The Latinx and Latin American Studies replaced the Latin American Studies minor in the fall 2020 semester.

Program description

The Latinx and Latin American Studies minor provides students with interdisciplinary perspectives for understanding the social, economic and political realities that shape and connect Latinx and Latin American communities as both are deeply linked in their history, their people, their languages and cultures. This minor also offers diverse approaches to studying the cultures, literatures and arts of the Americas. Ample opportunities are given to focus on Latinx cultures in our region, statewide, across the country, and in Latin America. Students minoring in Latinx and Latin American Studies will deepen their knowledge of the subject matter through courses in multiple disciplines with faculty members who have devoted their research work to these fields.  See below for details to completing this minor.  Catalog course descriptions are available here.   

Program requirements (18 hours)

A minimum of 18 hours with all courses earning a grade of C or better; up to 9 credit hours can be taken at another institution:

  • Satisfactory completion of one of the following two courses:
    • HISP 2650 - Hispanic Culture in the U.S. (3 credit hours)
    • SPAN 3210 - Life and Culture of Hispanics in the U.S (3 credit hours)
  • Satisfactory completion of one of the following five courses:
    • ANTH 3390 - Cultures of Latin America (3 credit hours)
    • ECON 3890 - Latin American Economies (3 credit hours)
    • GEOG 3810- South America (3 credit hours)
    • GEOG 3820 - Mexico and Caribbean (3 credit hours)
    • SOC 3350 - Sociology of Contemporary Latin America (3 credit hours)

Electives

The remaining 12 credits can be satisfied from the following list of pre-approved courses, if not already used to satisfy the first and second core courses. With approval from the program director, other courses may be eligible to satisfy the electives:

Note: In order to petition for other courses to serve as electives, fifty percent or more of its content must be focused on Latinx and/or Latin American issues.
