Spanish Advancement Scholarship Application

Deadline: March 5, 2021

1) Please review the following miminum requirements for the Spanish Advancement Scholarship. If you meet these minimum requirements and want to be considered for a scholarship, carefully read the instructions and submit this completely filled out application form and your essay (described below) to the Department of Spanish by the deadline listed above. The application each spring is for an award at the start of the following fall semester, pending fall class registration. Minimum requirements:

  • Student must demonstrate financial need.
  • Student must be an undergraduate Spanish major or minor.
  • Student must be in university academic good standing.
  • Student must be a sophomore level or above at time of award disbursement. First year students are invited to apply in spring for the following fall.

2) The application requires some basic information, including your overall GPA and grades in any classes taken in Spanish. You will also be asked for the names and department of at least one and up to two WMU faculty members or administrators who are willing to recommend you for this scholarship. There is no need to ask for written letters of recommendation; the committee will contact your reference(s) directly as necessary.

3) Please prepare a one page, typed essay (approximately 250-300 words in English) to attach and submit with this application. It must be a text file in Word, pdf, or rtf format. In your essay, explain your financial need and how receiving this scholarship would support your continued studies at WMU, including your study of Spanish.

4) You can save and return to this application. Once you submit your completed application, you will be notified by phone or email to arrange an interview with the scholarship committee if your application is accepted. Please indicate yes or no. If yes, please list the scholarships/awards previously received and what entity or department awarded them.
Please provide the name, department, and if possible, phone number of a WMU faculty member, teaching assistant, or administrator who is willing to recommend you for this scholarship.
