Working With a Basic Page

Basic pages allow users to create content that is displayed in a simple layout.  Authors create basic pages, publishers approve them and managers can add the page to the list of links in the section menu.

How to create a basic page

  1. Click on Add Content in the administration menu and choose Basic Page.

  2. Select the Section this page is being created in.

  3. In the Title field, enter the name of your page, capitalizing each key word.

  4. Use the Custom URL to provide the end of the URL, the text following the last slash (about in https://wmich.edu/dining/about).

  5. Add content to the Body field.

  6. Upload or select Attachments to add if you need to create links to any files in the Body.

  7. Press the Save button at the bottom of the page.  Then, while viewing the draft, select Needs Review from the Set moderation state drop down list and press Apply.  Ask a publisher in your section to review and publish your draft.

How to attach a file to a basic page

The system allows users to attach the following types of files to any basic page: pdf, mp3, ogg, oga, mp4, m4v, webm, ogv, ppt, pptx, pot, potx, doc, docx, dot, dotx, png, gif, jpg, jpeg, zip and eps.

  1. Scroll down to the Attachments field.

  2. Click Select Media and a dialog window, similar to the image upload, appears.

  3. Upload a new file from your computer, or select one from the Library.

The file will now appear as an attachment and the CMS will provide you with an address pointing to the document in the CMS.

  4. Copy the address (https://cms.wmich.edu/sites/...) of the selected document.

This link is going to be the path for a hyperlink in the Body field.

  5. Create a hyperlink and paste the address of the selected document into the Link URL field.

Upon page save, the CMS will automatically clean up the link, removing the "https://cms.wmich.edu" portion of the link, so that your attachment will be viewable from off campus.

  6. Click Insert.

To remove the document, click Remove Media. To attach a second document, click Add Another Item, then Select Media in the new field. Remove a link by highlighting the text and clicking the broken chain link icon. You will need to update any links manually if you remove or update the attachment—they will not automatically change.
