Working With a Directory List

Directory lists display a list of directory pages for a section. The main directory includes everyone in the department. There is also an option of creating subdirectories, which may be useful for large, multifaceted departments.  Only managers can create directory lists.

How to create a directory list

  1. Click on Add Content in the administration menu and click on Directory list.

  2. Choose the Section to which this directory belongs.

  3. The Title for your main directory page should be "Directory."

  4. For Show at top, choose someone by typing their name (their directory page will already need to be created). When the person's full name pops up, click on it.  The first person should be the head of the department.  The second person should be the department secretary or administrative assistant to the department head.

  5. The Subdirectory key only applies to creating subdirectories (see next section)—for your main directory page, leave this section blank.

Creating the subdirectory

A subdirectory might include only directory pages in a specialized area within the department. In WMU CMS, you will first create another directory list and give it a subdirectory key. This key can then be added to the directory pages that you would like to appear within a subdirectory.

  1. Click on Add Content in the administration menu and click on Directory list.

  2. Choose the Section to which this directory belongs.

  3. The Title for your subdirectory page should be something, like, "Electronic Communication Directory."

  4. For Show at top, leave this blank for now. Return to it later if you need to add a department head, etc. for this particular subdirectory—it is not recommended that you repeat the leadership that appears on the main directory.

  5. The Subdirectory key should be something like "electronic"—keep it short, lowercase and don't use any spaces because this value also becomes part of the URL for the subdirectory (e.g., wmich.edu/marcom/directory/electronic).

Adding directory pages to the subdirectory

The Subdirectory key value can be applied on any directory page within your section that you want to include in the subdirectory listing.

  1. Locate the directory page you would like to add to the subdirectory.

  2. Start a New draft.

  3. Scroll down and open the Subdirectories fieldset.

  4. Enter the Subdirectory key (add more keys if this directory page should appear on multiple directory lists)

  5. Click Save.

  6. Send the directory page for moderation.
