KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Western Michigan University’s Gamma Rho chapter of Beta Alpha Psi has once again been recognized as an elite chapter by the organization for its outstanding efforts during the 2023-24 academic year. The chapter maintained their gold status, which means they are a top chapter in terms of professional, outreach and service activities.

This is the 39th time the chapter has received the designation from the international organization.

Going for the gold

Beta Alpha Psi is an international honor and service organization for financial information students and professionals. There are over 300 chapters on college and university campuses with more than 300,000 members initiated since Beta Alpha Psi's formation. Its mission is to inspire and support excellence through study and practice in accountancy, finance, business analytics and digital technology; provide opportunities for service, professional development, and interaction among members and financial professionals; and foster lifelong ethical, social and public responsibilities.

The recognition received by the Gamma Rho chapter is a significant achievement. To achieve this status, the chapter exceeded the rigorous requirements of Beta Alpha Psi and excelled in the areas of academics, professionalism and leadership. During the 2023-24 academic year, WMU Beta Alpha Psi students completed dozens of activities focused on professional development and community engagement.

“The significance of earning gold status is valuable to a chapter,” says faculty advisor Amanda Remo, faculty specialist II of accountancy. “This status adds value to the membership and is evidence to recruiters that these are excellent students who have worked hard toward their chosen profession. It also shows the ability of these students to work together toward a common goal.”

The Gamma Rho chapter’s notable activities from 2023-24 include:

  • Community volunteer events, including participation in a shred-it event and packing meals at Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes.
  • Professional development activities, including networking with local firms, organizing and hosting a career fair and resume workshops and conducting site visits.
  • Active involvement in regional and national chapter meetings to uphold the high standards of the Beta Alpha Psi organization within the chapter.

“The Gamma Rho chapter has shown great leadership this past year,” Remo says. “The executive board worked hard to help the chapter grow and provide a fun and enriching organization that provides students with opportunities to give back and network with many employers.”
