Dr. Alex Davies is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Western Michigan University. After completing his Masters degree in chemistry at the University of Leicester (UK), he pursued his Ph.D. at the University of Kansas in organic chemistry. There he worked with Prof. Jon Tunge on developing new methodologies for metallaphotoredox catalysis. After completing his Ph.D., he joined the University of Michigan as a post-doc, working with Prof. Corey Stephenson and Prof. Nate Szymczak, on ethanol upgrading strategies for synthesizing advanced biofuels. Dr. Davies then joined the department in August 2023. His research focuses on developing new photochemical methods that use light as a renewable energy source to drive organic reactions. Specifically, he targets designing alternate synthetic strategies for reactions that produce large amounts of toxic waste, or require expensive, non-sustainable transition metal catalysts.
