4+1 Graduate Degree Partnership with Kalamazoo College

Western Michigan University Department of Chemistry 4+1 Program with Kalamazoo College Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

4+1 Master's Degree in Chemistry with Kalamazoo College and WMU

As stated in this Cooperative Agreement between Western Michigan University (WMU) and Kalamazoo College (KC), KC students may be able to transfer a maximum of 6 undergraduate credits from KC toward a WMU master's degree in chemistry.

Additionally, KC students may also be able to obtain from WMU a maximum of 6 graduate credits by examination based on advanced level course work at KC.

Combined, students may acquire a maximum of 12 credits that can be applied toward a master's degree from WMU. These 12 credits can be applied toward either the MA in Chemistry or the MS in Chemistry. Since the MA only includes coursework (no thesis), students may be able to complete their program within 1 year. However, since the MS requires a thesis project, students should expect to complete their program within 2-3 years.

  1. Graduate Transfer Credit: A maximum of 6 credits may be transferred to WMU from KC with the successful completion of any combination of the following courses with a grade of B or higher from KC:
    • CHEM 470 Principles of Medicinal Chemistry with Lab
    • CHEM 4661 Experimental Biochemistry Lab
    • CHEM 420 Instrumental Analysis with Lab
    • CHEM 465 Biochemistry II Macromolecules, Metabolism, and Diseases
    • CHEM 330 Inorganic Chemistry with Lab
    • CHEM 365 Biochemistry I Fundamentals of Biochemistry
  2. Prior Learning Assessment: A maximum of 6 credit hours based on the assessment of the final deliverables for KC CHEM 593 Senior Integrated Project may be applied toward a master's degree at WMU. The faculty in the WMU Department of Chemistry will determine the basis for assessment and the awarding of credit
