KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Starting her sales career from a young age, Erin Rogers began selling roofs, decks, doors and windows door-to-door while working for a family friend’s business. Ever since, she has been practicing her craft. She is now a sales and business marketing major in her senior year.

“I chose to major in sales because I wanted to provide solutions to people. I enjoy problem-solving and sales allows me to do that while interacting with people,” says Rogers.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, connecting with people has become incredibly challenging. Building relationships is one of the most crucial aspects of a sales professional’s job. It is also one of the aspects of this field that she is most excited for; however, she recognizes that creating a strong network takes plenty of hard work, drive and resourcefulness.

“Building these relationships can be difficult as a young professional as you are still understanding the industry and the key players that are a part of it. I trust that what I have learned from the sales program will provide me with the proper tools to make meaningful connections.” she says.

Engagement with the resources Western has to offer was Rogers’s first step into getting the most out of her experience in the program.

“When you make friends in your classes, join a student organization, or participate in the opportunities the Haworth College of Business has to offer, it allows you to think critically and grow in an environment that is supportive,” Rogers adds.

The transition from student to the workforce is a daunting leap for anyone, but she has found her own way by following her passions, getting involved, virtually or in-person, and participating in three different sales competitions.

On campus, Rogers is an active participant in the Sales and Business Marketing Association where she is vice president and is a member of the American Marketing Association. Proving herself as a leader during her college years, preparing her to stand out as an employee in her future.

Nationally, Rogers has been recognized for participating in the University of Toledo Invitational Sales Competition, National Collegiate Sales Competition and the upcoming State Farm Sales Competition. These competitions have been major steppingstones in her sales career.

Pursuing these challenges requires ample support from mentors, friends and colleagues—all of whom Rogers is thankful to have by her side.

Dr. James Eckert, Dr. Kelley O’Reilly, Professor Mary Nielsen, as well as students Nicole Deford, Sarah Obermeyer and Kaitlyn Lay are all individuals that guided me through the sales program and made me into the young professional I am today. All these individuals role-played with me for hours and gave me very helpful career advice,” Rogers acknowledges.

Already having accepted a position with Stryker once she graduates, She looks forward to what comes next.

“I plan to use the skills I have learned in Western’s sales program in my position as a marketing associate. I hope to continue building my sales and marketing skills within the medical device industry,” she says.
