Three ATYP Students Receive Student Scholar Awards from NAGC
The Academically Talented Youth Program at Western Michigan University is pleased to announce that not one, not two, but three of our students have won Student Scholar Awards through the National Association of Gifted Children! These awards celebrate students who demonstrate exceptional achievement and leadership. Each award grants the student a $300 cash award, a one-year free parent membership in NAGC, and an invitation to attend a featured session at NAGC’s annual conference, held this year in Milwaukee, WI. We are so proud of these brilliant students and their distinguished efforts. Please join us in congratulating Jasmine, Andrea, and Ozma!
Jasmine Liggins, ATYP English student, has been awarded the Dr. Martin D. Jenkins Student Scholarship Award, which honors the legacy of Dr. Martin D. Jenkins and his groundbreaking research on gifted Black learners.
“Jasmine remains one of the most delightful people I have had the privilege to work with in my twenty-four years as an ATYP instructor. When she is excited by ideas and connections made, which is often, her eyes dance with inspiration! We need people like Jasmine—not only brilliant, but also considerate and compassionate. Andrea Amaro, ATYP math student, has been awarded La Excelencia Latina Student Scholar Award, which recognizes gifted students and celebrates the diversity of advanced learners.
“Andrea is exactly the type of student every teacher would want in their class! She is extremely well organized, communicates exceptionally, and demonstrates understanding mathematics deeply. Andrea engages well with the content and seeks to understand, not simply to use short cuts to reach a correct answer. She is a joy to have the opportunity to work with, and I am certain she will do well in any endeavor she chooses to pursue.” - Andrea’s nominating instructor, Ashley Koch (Geometry)
Ozma Manriquez, ATYP English student, has been awarded La Excelencia Latina Student Scholar Award, which recognizes gifted students and celebrates the diversity of advanced learners.
“Ozma is intrinsically motivated to pursue paths of inquiry and research, and doesn't rest until a task is completed to 120%. Perhaps even more impressive than her academic achievements is Ozma's presence as a strong, clear-eyed, and compassionate leader in the classroom: she organizes the class group chat, remembers birthdays, and best of all, is always available to help out other students.
