Bio:

Jacklyn Brickman is an Assistant Professor of Kinetic Imaging at Western Michigan University's Gwen Frostic School of Art. Jacklyn joined the Frostic School of Art in 2022.

Jacklyn Brickman is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work entangles science fact with fiction to address social and environmental concerns by employing natural entities, processes, and technology. Brickman’s work explores relation-making between people and their environments through large scale installation, performance, moving image, and social engagement. Environments might range from immediate urban landscapes, municipal land, to wilderness. Her practice is rooted in the observation and examination of natural forms (especially plants) and their processes as a means of understanding, drawing similarities and speculating possibilities for the future. She employs instruments and programs ranging from optical lenses to digital imaging to compare and blur the natural and fantastical.

Brickman frequently collaborates with scientists, dancers, choreographers, musicians, and other artists as well as with the public to create works that are non-hierarchical and that engage and stimulate dialogue and co-operation. In a rapidly changing social construct and environment, her research revolves around how humans fit into, work with, and speculate their social and environmental relationships. She is founder of the Department of Planetary Futures and co-founder, alongside Dr. Sharon Gill, of IDEAS Collaboratory (InterDisciplinary Experimentations in Art and Science Collaboration Laboratory) which bridges art and science through immersive, interdisciplinary experiences in research, practice, and pedagogy.

Brickman’s work has been exhibited and screened at The Museum of Science in Boston, The Sculpture Center, and The Wexner Center for the Arts, and the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, BRIC TV, Millennium Film Workshop, Miami Art Basel through Loop Art Critique Residency and the MUD Foundation, On Art- Poland Film Festival, Warszawa, Poland, KLEX - Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival in Malaysia, Qipo Art Fair in Mexico City, and the Venice Arsenal (BAIFF Film Festival) in Italy. Fellowships and support include the National Academy of Sciences, Chaire arts et sciences, Jentel Foundation, Foundation for Contemporary Art, Plexus Projects, National Endowment for the Arts, Erb Family Foundation, and Folger Institute Shakespeare Library.

Jacklyn Brickman received an MFA in Art and Technology from The Ohio State University and a BFA in Sculpture with a minor in Photography from the College for Creative Studies.
