KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Senior business analytics student Isaac Ortega is cultivating community at Western Michigan University. Originally from Jackson, Michigan, the Haworth College of Business student is making long-term connections.

From the classroom to his career, Ortega found encouragement at WMU Haworth.

“My professors have been such a great support system. Every professor I’ve had, whether it was within my major or not, has wanted me to succeed and pushed me to be the best I can be. They are always willing to stay and talk after class, which helped me learn more about my field and how I can stand out to employers.”

Ortega has also availed himself of the resources that WMU Haworth offers.

“The Zhang Career Center has been a big driver in reaching my professional goals. Their staff has helped to enhance my resume tremendously, making me more confident when applying to internships.”

Outside of his academics, Ortega has gotten involved around campus through multiple student organizations. He is a member of Business Analytics and Informational Technology (BAIT), Delta Sigma Pi and men’s club soccer. Each of these organizations has contributed to Ortega's college experience and feeling at home at WMU.

“I transferred to WMU without knowing anyone and decided to join as many clubs as I could. Finding friends, whether it’s in classes or Delta Sigma Pi, has been the biggest factor in my sense of belonging. Every day I’m grateful I made that decision to get involved.”

With his sights set on graduation, Ortega is looking forward to his career. “I would say I’m most excited about the diversity of experiences that the field may bring me,” he says. “Business analytics has taught me skills that can be applied to any sort of business career. The variety is really appealing to me.”

As he finishes up his time at Western, Ortega leaves this advice for future business students.

“Put yourself out there and meet people. College allows you to create a network, but it’s up to you to build it within the short time you’re given. Making connections with professors, which can be as easy as staying after class and talking for a few minutes or joining a club, can go a long way. Overall, building relationships with other students and professors has made me feel like I belong, and I hope others find the same feeling.”
