Marc Henry Simon Memorial Scholarship

Application Instructions: Criteria and Process

The Marc Henry Simon Memorial Scholarship is given in honor of the memory of Marc Henry Simon who graduated from Western Michigan University in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in communication studies and who passed away in November 2013. This scholarship honors a student who demonstrates a capacity for leadership at the university and in the community and who also demonstrates a great capacity for joy.

Amount:

Each academic year a scholarship award of a minimum of $500 is available for one student. 

Selection Criteria:

1. Full-time undergraduate student with sophomore or junior academic status and a major in the School of Communication

2. A minimum GPA of 2.0

3. Preference will be given to a student who is involved in intramural activities, possesses leadership qualities and/or shows resilience from having overcome a challenge such as an injury, academic struggle, or personal hardship. If no applicant meets all three elements, the preferred recipient will be one who is viewed as a leader and has overcome a challenge

Application process: 

1. Applicants must submit the Marc Henry Simon Scholarship application form

2. Applicants must submit a two-page essay detailing their leadership qualities and experience, resilience (see preferences noted in Selection Criteria above) and if applicable, experience in intramural activities

3. Submit your materials by February 26, 2024 using the application form below

Selection Process:

A scholarship committee composed of School of Communication faculty will review the applications. The committee will determine the recipient.

Timing:

1. The scholarship recipient shall be named in the spring for awarding in the following academic year (2024-2025).

2. Each award shall be distributed one half in the fall semester (2024) and one half in the spring semester (2025).

3. Students graduating in Fall 2024 will receive the award for fall only.
