About Toni Ann Johnson

Toni Ann Johnson won the Flannery O'Connor Award for her linked story collection, "Light Skin Gone to Waste," which was also shortlisted for the Saroyan Prize and was a finalist for the 2023 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work. Her novella, "Homegoing," was selected as the winner of Accents Publishing's inaugural novella contest. Johnson's newest linked collection, "But Where's Home?" is the third book in the series and was chosen by Crystal Wilkinson as the winner of the 2024 Screen Door Press Prize. 

Johnson's first novel, "Remedy for a Broken Angel," was a finalist for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work by a Debut Author. As a screenwriter, Johnson was honored with a Sundance Screenwriter's Fellowship, as well as the Christopher Award and the Humantias Prize for her script "Ruby Bridges" (ABC/Disney) and a second Humanitas Prize for her script, "Crown Heights," a Showtime Television film. Johnson was also a co-writer of the film "Step Up 2: The Streets."

She earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles and has received support from The Prague Summer Program for Writers, The One Story Summer Conference, the Community of Writers and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. She has been a fellow with Kimbilio, The Hurston/Wright Foundation and the Callaloo Fiction workshop at Brown University.
