Western Michigan University’s Institute for Intercultural and Anthropological Studies (IIAS) offers students dynamic academic programs that explore the complexities of human culture, diversity, and history. IIAS programs combine intercultural learning, hands-on discovery, and a deep sense of belonging.

Established in 2018 within the College of Arts and Sciences, IIAS has quickly become a multidisciplinary hub for exploring the complexity of human cultures. The institute houses two complementary academic programs, African American and African Studies (AAAS) and Anthropology, each offering students a deep dive into the histories, experiences, and global diversity of human societies.

In addition to its academic programs, the IIAS also offers a variety of physical spaces designed to support its mission of belonging, collaboration, and experiential learning. Students visiting Moore Hall’s first floor will find a welcoming study lounge, an affinity space for community-building on the second floor, dedicated labs including a state-of-the-art bioanthropology lab, and an on-site lactation room available for expecting or nursing parents, families, and caregivers. Together, these additions reflect IIAS’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment where all students can thrive.

The IIAS Experience extends to the third floor of Dunbar Hall, on WMU’s main campus, where students and visitors may enjoy an educational and engaging anthropology exhibit. This large display showcases the breadth of human cultural expression and invites visitors to engage with the discipline’s global perspectives. The exhibit complements the institute’s academic offerings and provides learning opportunities for students across majors.

These spaces are more than amenities for IIAS students, they are extensions of the institute’s mission. “IIAS is a place that welcomes all students and fosters a sense of belonging,” says Faculty Specialist, Deirdre Nieves. “Our programs offer intellectual investigations of the human experience in an ever-changing global context, preparing students with critical perspectives and transferable skills for a wide range of careers.”

In addition to its variety of facilities and spaces, the IIAS provides an engaging academic environment where students can:

· Gain interdisciplinary insights into human culture and diversity.

· Participate in hands-on fieldwork and study abroad experiences.

· Prepare for impactful careers in a variety of fields, from public policy to education and beyond.

The institute supports interdisciplinary research, collaborative teaching, and intercultural programming that encourages students to engage with democracy, community, and global consciousness. Looking ahead, IIAS is exploring the possibility of serving as the administrative home for future programs, including Native American Studies.
