Associate Planner at Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission

I'm starting as an Associate Planner completing dual tasks utilizing my skills as a Geographer. I will be creating maps using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and completing community planning tasks as a support staff member for the CUPPAD Regional Commission.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is being able to utilize my skills to help build a solid foundation within the Central U.P. Region, which is where I grew up. I could not have transitioned to this role without my training/time with the Geography Department at WMU.

If you had a campus job or internship, how did they impact your career development?

Because of my training through the Geography Department, I was able to become an intern for the City of Kalamazoo Community Planning and Economic Development Department, where I used GIS to aid in implementing Phase II of their Natural Feature Protection Overlay District.

What advice do you have for others pursuing a career similar to yours?

Always be open to changes. Meet people and network and have fun! Life is hard but friendships and fun help get us through the tough times.
