Bronco Spotlight: Samantha Hooker
Marketing Specialist at Western Michigan University
I work on the marketing team for the Haworth College of Business. In my position, I handle the college’s social media accounts, help pull alumni events together and assist with communications, which can include press releases, student and faculty profiles and web content.
What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?
The Haworth College of Business has a lot of great alumni and very successful programs. It’s always rewarding to be able to share the successes of our graduates and students. I appreciate the impact we are able to have on people’s impression of the college and the excellent feedback we receive on our annual magazine and the events that we host. There are so many different aspects to my job that it’s impossible to ever be bored!
What activities, resources, or people helped you prepare for your career?
Prior to receiving my degree and applying for my current position, I was an administrative assistant in the same department where I work now. My supervisor, Stacey Markin, has done so much to prepare me for my career. She has been an excellent guide and has a way of making everyone around her better. I was a contemporary student and was so nervous to re-enter college after a 10-year break. Two of my English professors were absolutely amazing, Dr. Jil Larson and Dr. Katherine Joslin, rekindled my love of English and made me feel confident that I was going to be successful.
What advice do you have for others pursuing a career similar to yours?
I wish that I had understood as a young college student what I figured out as a contemporary student - the faculty and staff truly want you to succeed. If you are struggling, reach out to your professor or an advisor because they want to help and can offer suggestions and solutions that you would not have come to on your own.
