Environmental, Health and Safety Manager at Manchester Tank and Equipment

My job is with a private manufacturer of steel and aluminum pressure vessels. My responsibilities include: implementation and maintenance of the safety and environmental management systems; compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations; continuous improvement of operations; and training and education related to these areas.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is working in a team environment to accomplish goals.  The most challenging part of my job for the past couple of years is attempting to grow the business without enough employees.

What experiences impacted the choice of your career path?

I was not a very engaged student during my undergraduate time at WMU.  The only thing I really discovered was a bunch of jobs I didn't want to do. After graduation, I took the job with the most exciting name: 'Hazardous Waste Chemist.'

What advice do you have for students looking for their career after college?

Try a few different things including service industries and manufacturing. I'm not sure how anyone really knows what they want to do until they get some more exposure. If you're not in a business program, take a few business classes. Take advantage of the opportunities outside of the classroom as they're not as easy to find once you graduate.
