Undergraduate Travel Grant

About

The Undergraduate Travel Grant in the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University is provided to support opportunities for undergraduate students to travel to professional conferences to present their research.  This grant is intended to assist students in their professional development.  This grant is NOT for study abroad opportunities.  See the Arts and Sciences International Study Scholarship for study abroad financial support. 

Deadline for Applications

  • Deadlines are rolling, and applications may be submitted at any time. 

Applicant Eligibility 

  • Have a declared major or minor in a department or program within the College of Arts and Sciences 
  • Be enrolled during the semester (fall, spring, summer I, and/or summer II) for which they are requesting funds 
  • Have completed or been enrolled in at least nine credit hours at WMU 
  • Be in good academic standing 
  • Identify a faculty mentor who will support the student’s application 

Proposal Selection Criteria (coming soon)

Guidelines for Proposal Preparation 

  • An abstract/citation paragraph of 200-250 words concisely describing your project (this may be modified from the published presentation abstract).  
  • A 1-page statement describing your role in the project and what you gain from presenting your work at the conference, exhibit, or other professional venues. 
  • A detailed budget showing a breakdown of all expenses related to the work. Please include all expenses, even if they are greater than the requested amount. Please include all other sources of financial support for the travel, including other internal WMU awards, departmental funds, and external funding (e.g., grants and contracts).  
  • A copy of the notification confirming acceptance of the presentation. The notification should clearly show that the student is the first/presenting author. If notification is pending, award funds will be held until a confirmation is received.  

Funding may be used to:

  • Grants are for up to $250 for domestic travel and $500 for international travel. 
Funds may be used for: 
  • Airfare 
  • Mileage 
  • Hotel 
  • Meals 
  • Conference registration 
  • These funds may be used in conjunction with other internal WMU student awards. 

Fund Disbursement:

  • Funds for this award will be disbursed to a departmental account under the supervision of the student’s faculty mentor and the department chair. 

  • Funds must be used in accordance with University procedures and for the purpose for which they were awarded. 

  • This award will be offered for the deadlines listed as long as funds are available.
