Bronco Spotlight: Jabbar Mims

Bachelor of Business Administration in accountancy, 2019

Tax and Audit Accountant at Plante Moran

My job is very fast-paced, which is high-stressed but allows me to gain a lot of knowledge of the accounting field while also working on my public speaking skills.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is the people I'm able to work with and the places the job takes me.    The most challenging part is the winter busy season.

What activities, resources, or people helped you prepare for your career?

The activities, resources, and people that have helped me prepare for my career are Beta Alpha Psi, the National Association of Black Accountants, Dr. Vernon Payne, Dr. Ola Smith, Mrs. Sunday Bonifas, Mrs. Barbara Sagara, Dr. Langsam, Dr. Cari Burke, and Mrs. Jamie Long. These people and organizations were all, extraordinary in their own way. In terms of leading someone down the path of success with patience, perseverance, and support, I was grateful to gain all three from each and every student involved in the organization, as well as, each and every faculty member.

What advice would you offer students to help them decide on a career path?

Some advice I would lend to students helping them decide on a career path is to first, seek advice from whomever your caretakers are... whether it be your parents, grandparents, aunt and uncle, or anyone else who takes that place because admiration and mentorship are very important factors in choosing your future. The last piece would be to follow your heart and your gut feeling. Not always will your heart lead to getting everything you want in this world, but in the case of planning out your life, it is the only true way to define happiness in your life.
