Alumna Spotlight: Jonathan Royce leads with purpose and heart
“WMU’s Ed.S. program provided content I could transfer directly into my day-to-day work.”
Jonathan Royce brings over a decade of educational leadership experience to his new role as Superintendent of Onsted Community Schools. With a background that spans classroom teaching, assistant principal roles, and principalships in Ypsilanti and Charlotte, Jonathan has built his career on a foundation of equity, collaboration, and student-centered leadership. As he completes his Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree at Western Michigan University, he continues to strengthen his ability to lead schools with compassion and strategic vision.
“WMU’s Ed.S. program provided content I could transfer directly into my day-to-day work,” Jonathan shares. “Throughout the program, I was able to reach out to professors for advice on real-world challenges I was facing. That support was an added benefit I hadn’t expected.”
Jonathan’s leadership has earned recognition from the NAACP for his efforts to empower youth and foster inclusive, innovative educational environments. His philosophy is simple yet profound: a strong, caring, and supportive school culture drives both student success and staff well-being. He believes deeply in building relationships, fostering collaboration, and embracing continuous improvement to ensure every student can thrive.
A proud Michigan native who grew up in Stockbridge and Chelsea, Jonathan appreciates the close-knit spirit of the Onsted community. Beyond his role as superintendent, he is an author of a children’s book and founder of Tutorfit456, a nonprofit that combines fitness and literacy to help upper elementary students gain confidence and reach their full potential.
“I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned at WMU to continue building a culture of care, community, and excellence here in Onsted,” Jonathan says.
Jonathan’s story reflects the best of educational leadership—commitment, creativity, and a lifelong dedication to helping others grow. His journey exemplifies how WMU’s Educational Specialist program empowers leaders to make lasting, meaningful change in their schools and communities.
