New Student Orientation begins soon

New Student Orientation is just around the corner for both beginner and transfer students. At Orientation, students will receive their Bronco IDs, register for fall classes, learn how to get engaged on campus and meet current students. 

Honors Orientation takes place on May 9, 16 and 23. Transfer and Early Middle College (EMC) students can also attend one-day sessions on May 20, July 15 and Aug. 12. Nine two-day sessions for beginning students run through the month of June. 

Final exams next week

Exams begin Monday, April 25, and conclude Thursday, April 28. Regularly scheduled class meeting times are not held during exam week.

Spring commencement on April 30

WMU is hosting in-person commencement ceremonies in Miller Auditorium on Saturday, April 30, to celebrate spring graduates. Livestream the ceremonies at wmich.edu/commencement. Ceremony times are as follows:

  • 9 a.m.—College of Education and Human Development, College of Fine Arts
  • 12 p.m.—Haworth College of Business, College of Aviation
  • 3 p.m.—College of Health and Human Services, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences
  • 6 p.m.—College of Arts and Sciences, Merze Tate College

Updates from Admissions

May 1 deadline

Admitted first-year students should let us know they plan to attend Western by confirming their admission in their Gold Gateway account, preferably before May 1, National Decision Day. Once a student confirms their admission and submits their $100 enrollment deposit, they will be able to register for orientation.

Students wishing to enroll in Aviation Flight Science this fall must confirm their admission no later than May 1 (first-year students) or May 16 (transfer students). If you are working with incoming students, please encourage them to visit their Gold Gateway account to view a personalized list of next steps.

Final yield push

May 1 is quickly approaching and this is a key date for our campus. Please be aware that we continue to host guests, etc., so anything you can do to assist would be appreciated. If you are connecting with admitted students, here are some websites that may be helpful:

Spring grades due by noon on May 3

The final grade worksheet is available for grade submission until noon on Tuesday, May 3. Students will not be able to see their grades online until the grade roll process is completed in the Registrar’s Office. This is done shortly after noon on the day grades are due and nightly thereafter.

Free shredding event on May 6

To encourage proper disposal of the University’s protected information, the GLBA Committee is hosting a free document and media shredding event on Friday, May 6, from 9 to 11 a.m. near Sangren Hall (Lot 41).

Updates from Student Financial Aid

Packaging for 2022-23

Transfer students have been packaged for the 2022-23 academic year! Please direct students to check their WMU email for the interactive offer letter and package details.Printed offer letters will be sent to permanent addresses. Returning students will be packaged later this spring. 

Endowed scholarship notifications

Students who applied for an endowed scholarship for the 2022-23 academic year should be encouraged to check GoWMU and their WMU email for application results.

Increase in Pell Grant

The maximum Pell Grant award will increase from $6,495 to $6,895 for the 2022-23 award year.

Direct federal loan repayment

President Biden has extended federal student loan repayments through Aug. 31, 2022.
