SUM I satisfactory academic progress appeals

May 15 is the deadline for students to complete a satisfactory academic progress (SAP) appeal for SUM I. See more about SAP standards and the appeal process at wmich.edu/finaid/pdf/non-year/sap.pdf.

Processing times and office hours

The current processing time for paperwork, appeals, PLUS loans and alternative loans is four weeks, and our response time for email inquiries is five to ten business days. Drop-in hours are available Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. Phone hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our staff is also available to assist by email.

Last day to drop/add SUM I courses is May 15

Students may drop and add via goWMU until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 15. After May 15, dropping a class is considered a withdrawal and will show on the academic transcript with a final grade of “W”. Classes can be withdrawn in goWMU from May 16 to June 5. The refund schedule is listed in the calendar at the bottom of this email.

Preparing for SUM I census

SUM I census will take place Monday, May 15. In preparation, please ensure the correct instructor of record has been entered in Banner for all sections, sections on hold have been canceled or made active and all students attending have been registered so they will be counted (this includes students completing thesis and dissertation hours, independent studies, internships, seminars, etc.).

Dissertation, thesis and project deadlines

For those working with graduate students, please note the following deadlines:

SUM I 2023 graduation: 

  • Last day to hold dissertation defense: May 12
  • Defended dissertations due to the Graduate College: May 19

SUM II 2023 graduation:

  • Deadline to schedule dissertation defense: June 23
  • Last day to hold dissertation defense: July 7
  • Defended dissertations to Graduate College: July 14

Specialist project and master's thesis deadlines
Please note that master's thesis and specialist project defenses are not scheduled in the Graduate College. Please encourage students to contact their committee to schedule a defense.

  • SUM I 2023 graduation: Defended specialist projects and master's theses to Graduate College by May 19
  • SUM II 2023 graduation: Defended specialist projects and master's theses to Graduate College by July 14
